As London’s Christmas lights are switched off, the city will light up again for the Lumiere London festival. With dazzling art installations of light across the city, London is set to transform into a living light art exhibition. More than 40 artists from the UK and abroad have invented amazing light installations to turn London’s architecture and streets into works of art.

January is the perfect month to get cosy inside one of London’s celebrated West End theatres. A few shows are finishing their West End run in January or just after, so catch them while you can. In particular, check out The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre (until 3 March), Five Guys Named Moe at the Marble Arch Theatre (until 24 March) and La Soiree at Aldwych Theatre (until 3 February).

This acclaimed exhibition at the Natural History Museum is ideal for the whole family. It features more than 100 specimens of whales on display together for the first time, from a tiny porpoise to parts of an enormous blue whale. Looking at everything to do with the evolution of the whale over 50 million years, this exhibition is one of a kind.

This occasion celebrates the life and poetry of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Amazingly, the first Burns Night supper was held in 1801 in Ayrshire, Scotland by the friends of Robert Burns. It’s since become a tradition transported across the UK, seen by everyone as a good excuse for a party. Look out for restaurants and bars across London hosting Scottish themed events, from whisky tasting to haggis eating.

A show for people interested in owning a boat or keen to find out more about all things nautical, there are also lots of fun activities to get involved in. The indoor activity pool will allow you to try paddle boarding, canoeing and sailing free of charge, while the whole family can try activities together at the Beach Club. There are also classic boats to inspect in awe and nautically themed bars.
