Keep fitness on track

Maintaining a fitness regime is more important than ever before to travellers today, so we’ve spoken to a number of guests to find out what equipment they would most value in our gym. As a result, we’re introducing a range of more data rich and interactive equipment to the gym this year. Our new treadmills will tell you how effectively you run, how long your stride is, whether you are left or right foot dominant, plus much more. We’re also adding two types of static bikes – a Peloton bike for those who are used to spin classes, and a Technogym Smart Trainer that can connect to the virtual cycling world, Zwift.

Time to spa

City breaks demand a little time to kick back and relax too. That’s why we’re adding a brand-new wet area to our spa this year, which includes a new larger hot tub. We’re also transforming the ladies changing rooms to make them bigger and better than before. And…relax!

Re-imagining afternoon tea

This one is top secret for the moment – but all we can say for now is that our totally reimagined and interactive afternoon tea concept will be unlike anything you’ve experienced before. You will most certainly be making time for tea in 2020

One for the chocoholics

Incredibly exciting news for the sweet-toothed among us, we’re partnering with two MasterChef competitors and a chocolate guru food writer in 2020. Alex Talbot, Geoff Warburton and food writer Cat Black will be collaborating with us on a month-long celebration of chocolate. In particular, we’ll be using the best British artisanal chocolate to create our chocolate afternoon tea: ChocolaTea. We’ll also be adding mouth-watering new chocolate desserts on our lunch and dinner menus and creating chocolate inspired beverages. Plus we’ll end the month with a phenomenal chocolate experience. Hello whisky + cocktails

Our whisky collection of more than 100 bottlings range from the produce of incredible new distilleries, to old and rare varieties. In 2020, we’re partnering with even more whisky producers to add yet more interesting whiskies to our range. Our award-winning barman, Giovanni Castorina, has also got a treat in store for thirsty visitors in 2020, with a new cocktail list inspired by The Athenaeum’s incredible history and events that have taken place here, such as Take That’s historic break-up.

The Athenaeum in bloom

In 2020, we’ll be working with the charity Horatio’s Garden, who build wonderful gardens in NHS spinal centres to help support patients and their families. Working with one of their famous designers – whose name we can’t reveal just yet – we’ll be creating a show-stopping floral display in our terrace at the front of The Athenaeum.
