Classically trained ink painter Li Huasheng might not be a household name, but his reputation as one of China’s leading painters is certainly well known. Over the past few years his works have been snapped up by institutions such as the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Art Museum of China. In this exhibition of his most recent works, on display at the Mayor Gallery, one of Mayfair’s oldest, Li presents a series of abstract interpretations of traditional calligraphy, all of which were painted over the last decade in almost complete seclusion.
