Flowers at The Athenaeum

5th May 2019

Shiny vases

The first thing to get right when flower arranging has nothing to do with the flowers themselves! Make sure the vase – or whichever container you wish to use – is truly sparkling. Use a window cleaner or white vinegar until the surface is shining. This will help the flower arrangement you place inside it to absolutely sing.

Big to small

The general rule of flower arranging is that the larger flowers should be in the centre of the display and the smaller ones should be around the edges. When we talk about size, we mean the width of the bloom as well as the height. Always cut the stalks – even for the larger flowers – to ensure water can be effectively absorbed.

Use a flower arranging tool

Something many people don’t realise about perfect-looking displays of flowers is that there is often an unseen flower arranging tool helping them look pristine! There are various metal and silicone tools with holes in them – such as the Easy Arranger or Buddable – that can be attached to the top of vases. Arranging the flowers through the holes in these tools helps the flowers stay in place better. It’s also easy to create something similar with household objects – simply stick strips of tape to the top of a vase to form a grid. It has exactly the same effect!

Give your flowers a helping hand

It’s not always possible to put flowers straight into a vase without giving them any tender loving care first. If your flowers look even a tiny bit droopy, they need to be seared. Simply make up a pot of boiling water and place the tips of the stems in it for around half a minute. Always cut stalks diagonally before placing them in water in the vase, as this helps them soak up the maximum amount of water. Plant food is a must for adding to the water to keep the flowers perky. If you don’t have any to hand, add a teaspoon of sugar for exactly the same effect!

Shorter is better

If you’re looking for longevity in your at-home flower displays, look for shorter vases and containers to put them in. This will allow you to cut the stalks of your flowers shorter, which means the flowers will last for longer because the water has less distance to travel.
