Gaudi Art at The Athenaeum

27th September 2018

This week, The Athenaeum will be hosting Galería Gaudí’s first major UK exhibition to showcase the work of the world’s most talented artists. With contemporary art, abstract expressionism and some Gaudi-themed cocktails to go alongside, this promises to the art world’s event of the week in London.

A champion of the arts, The Athenaeum is already home to an impressive art collection, with originally commissioned pieces by the Martin Hulbert Studio and works by artists ranging from Louis Nicholas Darbon to Cecil Beaton.

Travelling from Madrid to London for the first time, Galería Gaudí will be showing the works of 30 talented artists during this week’s exhibition. From 27 to 29 September, this open event at The Athenaeum invites art lovers from across the city to experience new art in the elegant setting of our hotel by Green Park.

Here are just some of the artists whose work will be showcased:

Guillermo Fernández Díez is a Madrid-based visual artist who has exhibited across Spain, as well as in Hong Kong, South Korea, the Netherlands and Belgium. He’s particularly well known for his series of black and white abstract paintings. More recently he has focused on figurative art and collage, full of peculiar characters and fantastical ideas.

Lea Gulrich is a German artist with a fine arts background, having studied in Rouen, Trier and Krakow. She is known for her intricate ink artworks that juxtapose with bold and abstract backgrounds, with people and animals appearing to glow in neon colours. Depicting mystical and magical worlds, her work invites existential thought and discussion.

Gabriela Tolomei is an Argentinian artist who has exhibited in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Barcelona, London, Paris and Mexico. Formerly a businesswoman, marketing professional and amateur dramatics fan, Tolomei later changed paths to dedicate her life to art and creativity. Her abstract work is characterised by a combination of bright colours, lines and deliberate brush strokes, depicting her fundamental spiritual philosophy.

Alma Lisseth Tapia is a Mexican photographer known for her black and white shots. Her photographs often depict the simple joy of children living their lives in urban settings. She also has a series of stylised shots of young women striking bold poses.

Join us at The Athenaeum to soak up the works of these artists and others from 27 to 29 September. To celebrate the gallery’s namesake, we’ve created two special cocktails in THE BAR at The Athenaeum, served on coasters inspired by Gaudí’s great mosaic work.

Our signature cocktails for the occasion are those that have been rested in Italian clay pots for 48 hours before serving, bringing the flavour of Italian sunshine into the drinks. Enjoy the Gaudi Negroni – a twist on the classic Negroni with Chase GB Gin, sweet vermouth and bitters. Or try the Modernist Manhattan, made from our Special Athenaeum Whiskey blend, which consists 16 different single malt whiskeys aged between 10 to 25. With the Queen’s favourite aperitif Dubonnet added, plus aromatic bitters and bitter aperitif, this is a true treat for the taste buds.

Exhibition opening times:

Thursday 27 September, 18.30 to 22.00

Friday 28 September, 10.00 to 20.00

Saturday 29 September, 10.00 to 20.00
